About the Word Unscrambler

The Word Unscrambler takes any set of jumbled letters and instantly finds every valid word you can make from them. It's built for Scrabble, Words With Friends, Wordle, anagrams, and crossword solving — with results sorted by length and score so your best plays rise to the top.

When an unscrambler earns its keep

The obvious case is a stuck rack in Scrabble or Words With Friends. The more interesting ones:

• Learning rather than winning. Write down every word you can find yourself first, then unscramble. The gap between your list and the tool's is your study material, and failing to spot a word before being shown it is exactly what makes it stick.
• Crosswords and cryptics, where you have some letters and a known length. The starts-with, ends-with and contains filters turn a vague hunch into a short list.
• Wordle from guess three onwards, once you know the length is five, it starts with S, contains A, and has no R or T. Filter on exactly that and see what survives.
• Settling a challenge mid-game, with the other player's agreement — which is just a dictionary lookup, and has been part of the game forever.
• Anagram puzzles, pub quizzes, and word ladders, where there's no opponent to be unfair to.

Use the filters, not just the letter box

Typing seven letters and reading a list is the least useful thing this tool does. The filters are where it gets sharp. Word length narrows to exactly what fits the space you're playing into. Starts-with and ends-with handle board hooks, which is what mid-game Scrabble mostly consists of. Wildcards stand in for blank tiles, the only sensible way to evaluate a rack with a blank in it.

Game mode matters more than people expect: Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordle do not share a dictionary, and a word that scores in one is rejected in another. Checking against the wrong list is how you lose a challenge confidently.

One strategic note that no word list will tell you — the two- and three-letter words are worth more than any clever seven-letter play. They're what let you play parallel to an existing word and score four or five words at once, and they're how you unload a Q or a Z without waiting for an opportunity that isn't coming. Set the length filter to 2 and read the whole list; it's short, and an hour with it will do more for your average score than a year of hunting for bingos.
